Brad Brisco has written a piece call Sending Language (here). I’ve referenced it many times and have passed it along to those that will occasionally listen to me. It’s thorough and very enlightening to a piece of “THE CALL” that we miss in the Church.
The call that says we are continually called to “Go” and “Get Up” and “Leave”.
This language gets lost in the “Seeker-Driven” and “Attractional” language of our churches. It’s still there though. It’s still in the text. It’s still in the missio dei.
I was reading in Luke 13 two weeks ago (v10-17) and was thinking about “what did a woman that was crippled for 18 years do when she left that synagogue?”. You know she didn’t stay. You know that she wasn’t like “Thank God I’m heal so that I can get to church”. Where did she go? How did she go? What did she say after she left?
But it got me thinking, there is a sending nature of the healed. And if that’s true, there has to be a language of sending to the healed as well.
So here’s an incomplete survey:
-Matt 8v5-13 Centurion’s Son “Then Jesus said to the centurion, ‘Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.”
-Matt 9v1-8 a Paralytic “Then he said to the paralytic, ‘Get up, take your mat and go home.’”
-Mark 5v1-20 The Healing of a Demon-possessed Man “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
-Mark 5v21-34 Bleeding Woman “Daughter, you faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering”
-Mark 8v22-26 Blind Man at Bethsaida “Jesus sent him home, saying, ‘Don’t go into the village.’”
-Mark 10v46-52 Blind Bart Receives His Sight “Go“, Jesus said, “your faith has healed you.”
-Luke 5v12-16 Man with Leprosy “Don’t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
-Luke 7v36-50 Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
-Luke 17v11-19 Ten Healed of Leprosy “Go, show yourselves to the priests” (to the 1 that returned) “Rise and go; your faith has made you well”
-John 4 Jesus sends the Samaritan woman back to her village after blessing her
-John 8 Adulterous Woman “Go now and leave your life of sin”
-John 11v38-44 Raising Lazarus “Take off the grave clothes and let him go“
Maybe God has healed some in your faith community to send them, and maybe God has healed you for you “get up, take your mat and go home”.
